Every agent you’ve built has the same problem. It starts each session knowing nothing. You re-explain the project, re-establish context, re-describe what you tried last time. The knowledge doesn’t accumulate. The agent doesn’t improve.
Hermes Agent is built around the opposite assumption.
How the Memory Works
Nous Research designed Hermes with multi-level memory: short-term (within session), medium-term (cross-session working context), and long-term (learned patterns and preferences). When a session ends, Hermes writes what it learned to persistent storage. When the next session starts, it reads that context back in.
This isn’t just saving chat history. Hermes actively distills — it identifies what was useful, what went wrong, what patterns it should apply going forward. The memory that persists is processed, not raw.
The result: an agent that’s demonstrably more useful on your codebase in week two than week one. It knows your conventions. It remembers your preferences. It doesn’t repeat mistakes it’s already been corrected on.
Why the Community Is Moving to It
OpenClaw (Anthropic’s previous agent harness) was stateless by design. Every run started clean. That’s fine for isolated tasks but limits anything that requires continuity — maintaining a codebase over time, executing a long research project, building a system incrementally.
Hermes was built for continuity from the start. The architecture treats session persistence as a core feature, not an add-on. The heartbeat monitoring integrates directly with Paperclip, the same open-source observability tool Anthropic ships alongside it.
The open-source release gives you full visibility into how the memory distillation works, which means you can tune it for your use case. Default settings work well for software development workflows. Research and writing workflows may need different retention policies.
Getting Started
Install, point it at a project directory, and give it a task. The first session will feel like any other agent. By the third or fourth, the difference is noticeable. It knows where you keep your config. It knows you prefer TypeScript over JavaScript in this repo. It knows the last three things you tried that didn’t work.
Start with a codebase you’re actively developing. The memory payoff is proportional to how much context matters for the work.
