Karpathy's Autoresearch: The Cognition Framework Nobody Read

Andrej Karpathy dropped an autoresearch tool with a README that rewrites how you think about AI agents. Here's the part everyone skipped.

Andrej Karpathy released [autoresearch](https://github.com/karpathy/autoresearch) in early March 2026. It got 42,000 GitHub stars in a week. Most people looked at the code, maybe ran it once, and moved on.

Almost nobody read the README properly.

Above the installation instructions, Karpathy wrote a short fiction piece. It describes a future where "frontier AI research used to be done by meat computers in between eating, sleeping, having other fun, and synchronizing once in a while using sound wave interconnect in the ritual of 'group meeting'." That era is gone. Research is now done by autonomous swarms of AI agents across compute cluster megastructures. The codebase is in generation 10,205. It has grown beyond human comprehension. No researchers in the loop.
