What’s Overhyped (Skip These)
- Lovable / Bolt / v0 — Good for throwaway prototypes and landing pages. Not for real production code. If you need to maintain it past next week, use real tools.
- Generic “AI coding assistant” plugins without MCP — If it can’t connect to your tools, it’s already outdated. MCP is the standard now.
- Any tool that claims to “replace developers” — The best tools augment your workflow. The ones that promise to replace you produce code nobody can maintain.
- Paid wrappers around free MCP servers — Some companies are just wrapping open-source MCP servers with a UI and charging $30/mo. Check if the underlying server is free first.
- Deepcon — Claims 90% doc accuracy vs 65% for Context7, but real-world testing doesn’t back this up. Stick with Context7 until Deepcon proves itself with more adoption.
How to Evaluate New Tools
Ask three questions:
- Does it reduce hallucinations? (Context7, Airlock = yes)
- Does it give Claude real data instead of guesses? (GitHub MCP, CodeGraphContext = yes)
- Can I verify the output automatically? (Playwright, test frameworks = yes)
If the answer to all three is no, it’s a wrapper around a prompt. Skip it.
One more filter: check GitHub stars and recent commit activity. A tool with 50 stars and no commits in 60 days is abandonware. The MCP ecosystem moves fast. Use tools that are actively maintained.
